2010 - The North Country's Last Stand Against Obscurity

Nestled between two of the greatest lakes ever fished by man (and the ocassional woman) lies New York State's North Country. With Lake Champlain to the east (link), Lake Ontario to the west (link), and the majestic Saint Lawerence River (link) keeping Canadian aggressors at bay (link), the North Country is the finest place to live, thrive, and survive (link) in all of New York State.

For as wonderful as the North Country really is, let's be real. It's a looong way to Albany (link). And even though Cape Air offers insane airfare between the two cities (link), regular air travel won't bring any more influence to our region.

The 2010 Census brings with it a reallocation of representation in Washington and Albany (link). With this Census comes the risk that New York will lose one representative in the House, and that other districts will be realigned to match the new populations (link)(link)(link).

As we covered yesterday, New York City couldn't care less about Upstate if we seceded (link) and took our plentiful Wind (link), Hydro (link), and Nuclear (link) powerplants with us. Well, maybe that would get their attention.

With Democrats in control of the New York State Senate, the North Country stands little chance of retaining power at the state level, or any form of self-determination. The locus of political power lies with the highest population centers. The cities of New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse literally out number the rest of the state combined (link).

We sent Darrel Aubertine to Albany to represent us because, gosh darn it, he's such an awww-shucks-likeable guy. He's a dairy farmer, he's a North Country Boy! He's "one of us!" (link).

Member line-items aside, Darrel's done nothing for me. And this most recent Budget move by the democrats is unbelievable (link). Aubertine rides in on a red tractor and bravely saves the Ogdensburg Prison! Meanwhile, Senator Little's prisons in Clinton and Essex counties? Closed.

Really? The democrat party puts together a budget that saves one prison in a democrat senate seat, and closes two in the neighboring republican seat. Gosh, Darrel. I'm sure glad that you "certainly fought very hard" for Ogdensburg in the months you say your leaders have been working on this budget. I wish Senator Little had been able to see the budget outline where you kill her prisons before last night.

Shucks. Must have slipped your mind, right?

Well, as slippery as your mind is (link), these are real people with real jobs on the line. These jobs represent hard working families all over the North Country. And while we elected you to represent our values and the character of our region, all you've done is adopt the whatever-it-takes-to-keep-power ethic of the incumbents.

And that incumbent attitude is going to kill the North Country.

Senate democrats, based in New York City are going to use the Census redistricting to keep power for the next three generations, and there's only one way to stop them.

This November, we'll have a clear choice between one aww-shucks patsy for the party and true Republican Leadership. I heartell that this Monday, we'll meet that candidate (link).

November can't come soon enough.
